IE7: Cut, Copy and Paste Functions disabled for security
The recent update to Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) with its new enhanced features also comes with a potential hitch. If you are using a content management system and you are still using Windows XP, the cut, copy and paste buttons in the WYSIWYG editor will no longer work. This issue is resolved if upgrading to Windows Vista.
You will now need to use the following keys in order to perform the functions.
To copy
Highlight the text or image you wish to copy and press Ctrl C (hold down the Control button and the C button on your keyboard simultaneously)
To Cut
Highlight the text or image that you wish to cut and press Ctrl X(hold down the Control button and the C button on your keyboard simultaneously)
To Paste
Press Ctrl V (hold down the Control button and the V button on your keyboard simultaneously) and the text or images that you have cut or copied will be pasted into the WYSIWYG editor
Comments
The reason why the latest version of IE7 has disabled the clipboard function is to protect users. Users who cut and paste credit card numbers, passwords, usernames are vulnerable to having the contents of the clipboard read.
As the web becomes more used, it is also more prone to online fraud and information theft. Let's fact it, security is inconvenient. It's a hassle having to remember dozens of different complicated usernames and passwords or to have a session expire and have to login again. In the case of internet explorer 7.0, security has triumphed over usability and WYSIWYG editors have become a little less usable.
But by upgrading to Windows Vista, the problem of not being able to use the cut, paste and copy icon is fixed. A pop up message appears that asks the user if they want to trust this website to access the clipboard. By answering "yes", the cut, copy and paste functions on the content management system, will work.
The downside of upgrading to Windows Vista, is that you will certainly need to upgrade your computers, because Vista is resource hungry and is particularly fond of consuming memory. One to two Gigabytes worth of memory is needed to run Vista.

Internet Explorer 7.0
Should you upgrade to Internet Explorer 7.0.? Internet Explorer 7.0 has new features like
- News feeds. Internet Explorer 7 can deliver the latest updates from your favorite sites
- Improved Printing Internet Explorer 7 automatically shrinks text for improved printing , so all webpage content fits on your final printed page. Print options also include adjustable margins, customizable page layouts, removable headers and footers, and changeable print space.
- Tab browsing Open multiple websites in one Internet Explorer window with tabbed browsing. See thumbnail images of all open tabs in a single view. Organize multiple tabs into a single tab group and save it as a favorite.
- Search from browser Search the Internet directly from the browser frame using your favorite search provider with the instant search box.
- Improved Security from Phishing
But, like any browser upgrade, it will also change the way certain dynamic functions work. If you use Internet Explorer 6.0 to access an intranet, extranet, company application, or dyanmic website then you should contact your developer before upgrading to Internet Exploer 7.0 to ensure that the functionality of your web application will work after you have upgraded to IE 7.0.
One big annoyance about IE7.0 is the rearrangement of the functions and the difficulty getting used to their new positions. If you are a novice user and use your computer infrequently, you may regret upgrading to IE7.0. Perhaps, try out IE7.0 at your local library before taking the plunge and upgrading.
