If you want to buy Australian domain names, there are strict eligibility requirements. The following Australian domain names are not open domains - you must meet the requirements in order to be able to register the domain. Basically, you need to be a company, business or organisation that operates a legitimate business in Australia, and hence have a ABN issued from the Australian Taxation Office or an ACN number issued by ASIC or a Business Name Registration Certificate issued by Asutralian State Fair Trading Office, To register AU domains, you must either reside in Australia or have an company representative in Australia. Australian domain name registration is one of the strictest in the world.

Registering Multiple domains
If you are registering a Australian domain name, it is also a good idea to register the corresponding .com domain. If you don't register the corresponding .com domain name, someone else may register it as there are no eligibility requirements for .com domains; this may be one of your competitors, who can use the domain name to direct traffic to their website. Don't think that it won't happen to your business, many businesses have found that the .com version of their domain name has been bought by one of their competitors. Sure, you can take legal action but you may not win and hiring a lawyer is not cheap.
