The .tel will allow contact information to be stored directly in the DNS. Unlike traditional domain names which map a domain name to an ip address, .tel domains will map the domain name to contact information. This domain name space is an attempt to build a world telephone/internet book using DNS.
.tel domains are specifically ordered to be used to store your contact information. The table below summarizes its features. DO NOT order a .tel domain name if you are wanting to use it to build a website. .tel domains are used to store your company contact information. They are not the same as other domain name extensions like .com, .com.au, .net, .org etc..
We advise that you DO NOT use hyphens in your dot tel domain name, as mobile devices have trouble inputing hypens into their web browsers. So it would defeat the purpose of a dot tel domain name if it couldn't be entered easily into a mobile phone web browser.
| Features|| .tel domains|| non .tel domains|
| Speed|| NAPTR records are very small, mostly transmitted over User Datagram Protocol(UDP) and extremely quick.||Webpages are large, transmitted over HTTP connections and can be slow especially on mobile telephones|
| Cost|| |
Due to the small size of NAPTR records, they can be cheap to transmit over mobile data networks
|Viewing webpages on mobile phones can become expensive due to their size|
| Complexity||Publishing contact data can be done in a few simple clicks|| Publishing webpages is more complex and requires programming knowledge or use of a service.|
| Reliability|| The DNS-based solution is inherently a globally distributed system that is scalable and has no single point of failure|| Web-based services can have a single point of failure.|
| Global Access|| |
DNS-based services are open and accessible without the need for logging in or becoming a member Web-based services require users to login before a service can be used.
|Web-based services are much more commonplace and hence do not benefit from the market visibility available to newly issued Top Level Domains|
tel may receive more visibility if it becomes a standard for communications because it is a Top Level Domain
|Unless the .tel domain is indexed by search engines, or other services, its use is limited to customers who know the domain exists.|
| Setup||The DNS-based solution has no need to construct and maintain a website|| Web-based solutions require construction and maintenance of a website|
How .tel works?
A user looks up a .tel domain name on his internet enabled mobile device. The device uses its local network (GPRS, 3G, WiFi, Ethernet, NextG etc.) to query the DNS for the dot tel domain name. The DNS responds with the contact for the .tel domain queried. This could include a mobile phone number, an email address, office phone numbers, etc. The user elects to contact the company using the .tel records.
Examples: http://largeco.tel/ , http://smallco.tel/
Updating Contact details
Registrants can update the contact information stored under their .tel domain name. Every change made is immediately visible because it is be published and propagated through the DNS.
