Editing zone files
All our hosting services will allow you to edit your zone file. You will need to login to http://domains.passioncomputing.com.au , click 'edit' next to your domain name you wish to edit, then 'zone file' link will be in the vertical menu. If you do not see this link, you will need to order dns hosting., which is free with all domain name registrations or transfers. The zone file editor will pop up in a new window, so you must allow pop ups to be able to see the zone file editor. Near the top of your browser, it will ask you a question to allow pop ups for this site and you should answer 'yes'. You may need to navigate back to the 'zone file' link after you have enabled popups.
The following screen will appear. You then need to click "Zone Manager"

After clicking "Zone Manager", the following screen will appear that shows you your current zone file.

Brief Instructions
After clicking "Zone Manager", the a screen will appear that will show you your current zone file and you can then edit and delete and add more zone files.
To add an A name record, click "A" and the following screen will appear. To enter a hostless A name, leave the first field blank and then enter in the ip address corresponding to that A name record. If you were creating a subdomain, you would enter, the name of the subdomain in the "Name" field. A hostless A name record is necessary so that your domain name without the www will point to a destination.

To create a Cname record, click on "CName" and fill in the hostname of the Cname record. In this case the www record has a cname of web.me.com

Click on "TXT" and then enter the record in the TXT field, leaving the Name field blank. If you are creating a text file for Google Apps, then you need to cut and paste this into the TXT field.

Enter the exchange record without the dot at the end and the preference number. If you enter the dot at the end of the exchange record you will get an error message. You may need to log back in, if you get this message and navigate back to the 'zone file' administration page.

Common uses for zone file editing
To set the www and hostless A record for a domain name to point to a dedicated ip address,
This zone file means that you set your domain name to work so that when someone types in your domain name into a browser, with or without a www, the domain resolves to an ip address. The ip address should be the dedicated ip address of your server.
There should be a www A reoord and corresponding ip address and a hostless A name record corresponding to the same ip address. An the ip address is commonly the dedicated ip address of the server that is hosting the website.
Editing zone files for mobileme website
An example of what your zone file record should look similar to when creating a zone file for mobileme hosting is below. The key records are the www C name record that is set to web.me.com and the hostless A name record that is set to Apple's dedicated ip address. See The Setting up zone files for MobileMe for more detailed instructions
You will notice, your domain name will appear in the zone file records.

Last Step: Change your Name Server Records
If you have transferred a domain name in, you will need to change your Name Server records, before changes you have made to your zone files will work. By default, all new domain name registrations have the name server records below.
Please accept with blind faith, that we are correct that your zone files will not work until you set the authoritative name servers to point to the name servers below. Most people struggle with this, because it doesn't make sense but what changing your NS records does, is to tell the central registry and all the other name servers in the world, to look to this hosting service and the zone files that you just made to know where to point your domain name to.
WARNING: If you have a website or email associated with your domain name, these services will be affected by changing the name server records. Do Not change these records unless you know what you are doing !!
